What flash settings should I use at a wedding reception?
Five scenarios you will actually meet between dinner and the last dance, with a starting exposure for each, what to change first when it looks wrong, and why the ceiling decides most of it.

Every row is a starting point, not a rule. Shoot one frame, look at the back of the camera, then move the one value in the last column. If two things look wrong at once, fix exposure before you fix color: color is a slider in post, exposure is not always.

Assumes a full frame body, a 35mm or 50mm prime, and a speedlight on the hotshoe. On a crop sensor, open one stop or add ⅔ of a stop of ISO.
Why do I read the ceiling before anything else?
Because a ceiling is the largest, cheapest modifier in any room, and it is either available to you or it isn’t. A white ceiling at ten feet turns a hard little speedlight into a soft overhead source the size of the room. A black ceiling, a timber barn with open beams, or a twenty foot ballroom returns nothing. You fire into the dark and get a stop and a half less than you expected, at the wrong color.
So the first thing you do walking into a reception space is look up, then take one test frame at the default row above. Sixty seconds. It tells you which half of this article you are living in tonight.
What does “dragging the shutter” actually mean?
It means choosing a shutter speed slow enough that the room’s own light records alongside your flash. The flash freezes your subject in about 1/1000 of a second regardless of what the shutter dial says; the shutter is only deciding how much of the DJ’s uplighting, the string lights and the candle glow makes it into the frame behind them.
- Set flash to manual, 1/16, and bounce it.
- Drop the shutter to 1/60 and shoot one frame of the room with no one in it.
- If the background is black, keep dropping: 1/40, 1/30, until the room appears. Below 1/30 handheld, you are gambling.
- Now bring the flash power up or down until the person is correct. Background and subject are two separate dials, and that is the whole trick.
These numbers assume a speedlight with a guide number around 60m at ISO 100. Under a ceiling above roughly twelve feet, or any ceiling that is not close to white, bounce is off the table and you are in row two of the table. We would rather say that than pretend one table covers every room.

Can I just use TTL and stop thinking about this?
You can, and for the cocktail hour it is fine. The problem shows up during the toasts: TTL meters again every frame, so a white dress entering the frame changes the exposure of the shot after it. Manual gives you the same answer every time in a room whose light isn’t changing.
Why 1/160 and not 1/200?
Most cameras sync somewhere between 1/200 and 1/250, and 1/160 leaves you a margin so a mistimed frame doesn’t come back with a black band across the bottom. It also lets slightly more ambient in, which keeps backgrounds from going dead.
My photos are warm and orange. What did I do wrong?
Nothing. You mixed daylight balanced flash with tungsten room light. Either gel the flash with a CTO to match the room, or kill the ambient with a faster shutter and accept a darker background. Chapter 05 covers this properly.
