How do you shoot family formals in eleven minutes?

The arithmetic, worked in the open

A grouping takes about a minute when the system works: twenty seconds of assembly because the people were staged and named, twenty of arranging hands and gaps, ten for two frames, ten of release and overlap with the next call. Eight to ten groupings lands at about eleven minutes, which is the promise in this chapter’s title and a realistic one. The same arithmetic is the argument you need at the planning table: a thirty grouping list is half an hour minimum under ideal conditions, taken directly out of the couple portrait window, and saying that with numbers during the shot conversation is how the list gets shorter while everyone is still calm. The standard eight: couple with each side’s parents, each side’s immediate family, each side’s grandparents, both full families, and the wedding party.

The named list and the fetcher

Two artifacts make the eleven minutes possible, and both are built before the day. The list: every grouping written with first names, in shooting order, on paper in your pocket, with the private notes from the shot conversation baked in, who is divorced from whom, which pairings need separate frames, who needs a chair. And the fetcher: one appointed relative or wedding party member who knows the faces, holds a copy of the list, and stages the next grouping while you shoot the current one. The fetcher matters more than any camera setting in this chapter: you cannot photograph and hunt for an uncle simultaneously, and the coordinator, who knows the schedule but not the faces, cannot do it for you.

Running the eleven minutes

1. Stage the whole cast once: everyone on the formals list gathers at the location straight after the ceremony, announced by the officiant or coordinator so you never say it twice.
2. Largest groupings first, then release: both full families early, so children, elderly relatives, and impatient uncles are freed in minutes, not held for the whole set.
3. Keep the couple planted; build each grouping around them. Moving two people per grouping instead of eight is where the minute per group actually comes from.
4. Call names loudly and kindly from your list, place people by touchless direction, hands, gaps, and phones away, and shoot two frames minimum of every grouping.
5. Say thank you, you are done to every released group by name. Nothing empties a formal session politely faster than people being visibly finished.

Where to stand them

Choose the spot during the walkthrough, and choose it for light and logistics over scenery: open shade with sky overhead, per the measured shade findings in the outdoor chapter, level ground for grandparents, close to where guests already are, and a clean background beats a spectacular one that costs a five minute walk. In harsh sun with no shade, backs to the sun and expose for faces; indoors, the biggest window in the room, or the flash setup from the off camera chapter with its group row’s distance warning: the light far enough back that the falloff across three generations stays even. Aperture earns respect here: two rows of family need depth of field, so this is the one part of the day the fast prime stops down.
